Description
The M.A.S. 563/568 represents an Italian motor torpedo boat of the Regia Marina from the Second World War. Since the First World War, Italy had placed strong emphasis on the development of small, fast torpedo-armed vessels, commonly known as MAS, which were originally derived from civilian designs.
During the Second World War, the MAS boats of the 500 series were fitted with more powerful and reliable Isotta-Fraschini petrol engines. They were employed both for torpedo attacks and for anti-submarine warfare using depth charges. With a top speed of up to 45 knots and armed with two 450 mm torpedoes, these vessels formed an important part of Italian naval operations.
