Description
The Semovente M43 da 105/25 “Bassotto” was developed by the Italian industry to significantly enhance the offensive capabilities of the Regio Esercito’s armoured units. It was based on a modified, widened and lowered chassis of the M15/42 tank, allowing for increased firepower and improved protection.
The main armament consisted of an Ansaldo 105/25 howitzer, mounted in a fixed casemate. Additional improvements were made to the frontal armour to increase battlefield survivability. The M43 entered service in limited numbers in 1943 and saw combat on the Italian front.
Thanks to its effective balance of firepower, mobility and protection, the “Bassotto” is widely regarded as the most powerful Italian armoured fighting vehicle used during World War II. After the Italian armistice, several vehicles were captured and successfully employed by German forces under the designation StuG M43 mit 105/25.
