Description
When Germany launched its invasion of the Soviet Union in 1941, the United States realised that involvement in the conflict was increasingly likely. President Roosevelt therefore ordered the production of the M4 tank. Partly derived from the earlier M3 Grant, it introduced key improvements such as the removal of the secondary turret with its 37 mm gun and a redesigned upper hull, either welded or cast.

The M4A1 variant featured a completely new turret fitted with a more effective 76 mm gun and additional armour. Despite these upgrades, protection remained limited, leading crews to reinforce their tanks with sandbags, welded track links or even steel plates and concrete blocks. Entering service from January 1944, the M4A1 took part in all major campaigns in Western and Southern Europe, beginning with the Normandy landings. Its mobility, firepower and numerical strength made the Sherman a decisive factor in Allied armoured operations.
