Description

The Schnellboot S-100 was one of the most iconic and effective fast attack vessels of the German Kriegsmarine during World War II. Due to the restrictions imposed by the Treaty of Versailles, Germany focused early on light naval units, leading to the development of fast torpedo boats starting with the S-1.

The S-100 introduced the distinctive armoured bridge, a necessity due to increasing Allied air superiority and low-level air attacks. Built using a composite structure with aluminium frames and a wooden hull, the S-100 combined high speed with excellent seaworthiness. These boats were primarily used for night attacks against Allied shipping around the British Isles, but also operated in the Mediterranean and Black Sea.

From 1943 onward, with most major German surface ships destroyed or immobilised, Schnellboote remained among the few operational naval units, facing increasingly dangerous missions and suffering heavy losses while maintaining their tactical effectiveness.
