Description
The Vosper 72’6” MTB 77 was one of the most famous British Motor Torpedo Boats operated by the Royal Navy during World War II. The Vosper shipyard became renowned for producing fast, agile and heavily armed coastal craft capable of fulfilling multiple combat roles.
These MTB’s were mainly used for coastal patrols, attacks against enemy shipping, and anti-submarine warfare in the North Sea and the English Channel. Powered by three engines delivering around 4,200 hp, they could reach speeds close to 40 knots (over 70 km/h).
Throughout the war, several variants (Type I and Type II) were introduced, featuring different offensive and defensive armament configurations. Standard armament included 457 mm torpedo tubes, depth charges, and Vickers .303 machine guns, sometimes supplemented by .50 calibre guns for anti-aircraft defence. Crew strength typically ranged from 10 to 13 men.
