Description
On 28 March 1942, the British Royal Navy and Commandos launched a joint operation against the heavily defended port of Saint-Nazaire in occupied France. Codenamed Operation Chariot, the objective was to disable the large dry dock, a vital facility supporting German Kriegsmarine operations in the Atlantic.

The attack involved destroyers and a flotilla of fast motor launches carrying the commandos. A decisive role was played by light assault craft, including Vosper MTB 74. This boat was specially modified by the Royal Navy, with its torpedo tubes repositioned to the bow and exhaust silencers fitted to allow covert operation. Its task was to breach the anti-submarine nets and launch torpedoes at the lock gates. Although the target was successfully hit, MTB 74 was struck during withdrawal and subsequently sank.
