Description
The Semovente L40 da 47/32 was developed on the chassis of the L6/40 light tank to provide the fast units of the Italian Regio Esercito with an armoured vehicle capable of artillery support and anti-tank duties. The rotating turret was removed and replaced by an open casemate mounting the 47/32 Mod.1935 anti-tank gun, the same weapon used on the Italian “M” series tanks.

 

The vehicle was characterised by its small size, riveted armour typical of Italian production and a crew of just two men. Although its performance became inadequate against more modern enemy armour, it was used by the Regio Esercito in Libya, Tunisia and during the Italian campaign. After the 1943 Armistice, some vehicles were employed in secondary roles by the Wehrmacht and the Luftwaffe ground forces.
