Description
The LCVP (Landing Craft, Vehicle and Personnel) was developed by Higgins Industries, based on a rugged workboat designed for operations in the swampy regions of Louisiana. During World War II it became the standard Allied landing craft.
The LCVP took part in all major amphibious operations in both Europe and the Pacific, most famously during the Normandy landings. It was capable of carrying up to 30 fully equipped soldiers, light vehicles or supplies directly from transport ships to the beach. Its folding bow ramp allowed for rapid unloading under combat conditions.
Typically armed with two rear-mounted machine guns and powered by either a 250 hp Hall-Scott gasoline engine or a 225 hp Gray diesel, the LCVP combined simplicity, durability and outstanding versatility. It remained in service after WWII, seeing action in Korea and Indochina, and was later adapted for civilian use.
