Description
Building on experience gained during the First World War, the Italian Regia Marina developed a range of innovative surface and underwater assault craft. One of these was the M.T.M. (Motoscafo da Turismo Modificato), a small explosive attack boat designed for fast and hard-to-detect strikes against enemy ships.
Once close to the target, the pilot locked the rudder to maintain course and bailed out from the stern at a safe distance. The high-explosive charge housed in the bow detonated upon impact with the target.
The most successful operation involving the M.T.M. took place in March 1941 at Suda Bay, when an Italian assault group led by Luigi Faggioni sank the British heavy cruiser HMS York. This action remains one of the most notable successes achieved by the Regia Marina using these special attack craft.
