Description

The USS Yorktown (CV-5) was the lead aircraft carrier of the American Yorktown class and sister ship to the famous USS Enterprise (CV-6). Launched in 1936 and commissioned on 30 September 1937, she played an important role during the early months of American involvement in World War II.

Following the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in December 1941, Yorktown was deployed to the Pacific. She participated in several major operations, including raids against the Marshall and Gilbert Islands and the Battle of the Coral Sea. During the decisive Battle of Midway in June 1942, Yorktown was severely damaged by Japanese aircraft. While salvage efforts were underway, she was struck by torpedoes from a Japanese submarine. Yorktown finally sank on 7 June 1942.
