Description

The USS Enterprise (CV-6), nicknamed Big E, was the second aircraft carrier of the American Yorktown class and one of the most famous warships of World War II. Launched in 1936 and commissioned on 12 May 1938, she narrowly escaped the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on 7 December 1941 after bad weather delayed her return to port.

Throughout World War II, Enterprise played a major role in nearly every important American naval campaign in the Pacific. She participated in the Doolittle Raid, the Battle of Midway, the Guadalcanal campaign, the Battle of the Philippine Sea and the Battle of Leyte Gulf. With an impressive total of 20 Battle Stars, Enterprise became the most decorated American warship of World War II.

Following the war, Enterprise took part in Operation Magic Carpet, helping to bring American servicemen home. She was decommissioned in 1947 and eventually sold for scrapping in 1958.
