Description
The USS Iowa (BB-61) was the lead ship of the famous American Iowa class and one of the most impressive warships of World War II. Launched on 27 August 1942, she was commissioned on 22 February 1943. With a powerful main armament of nine 16-inch (406 mm) guns, high speed and extensive armour protection, Iowa ranked among the most advanced battleships of her time.
In 1944, USS Iowa was transferred to the Pacific, where she participated in several major operations against Japan. She supported American campaigns in the Marshall Islands and the Mariana Islands and took part in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Her heavy artillery and extensive anti-aircraft armament made her an important asset in protecting American aircraft carriers and supporting fleet operations.
Following World War II, Iowa continued her service with the United States Navy. She was deployed again during the Korean War and underwent extensive modernisation and reactivation during the 1980s. On 19 April 1989, a tragic explosion occurred in one of her main gun turrets, killing 47 sailors. Iowa was finally decommissioned in 1990 and is now preserved as a museum ship in Los Angeles.
This impressive Trumpeter 1:200 scale model kit measures 135.2 cm in length and contains over 1,520 parts. The kit features a detailed hull, a two-piece deck, accurately reproduced gun turrets and eleven photo-etched sheets.
