Description
The HMS Rodney (29) was a British Nelson-class battleship and sister ship to HMS Nelson. Built by Cammell Laird in Birkenhead, she was launched on 7 November 1925 and entered service in 1927. Rodney was distinguished by her unusual design, featuring all three triple 16-inch (406 mm) main gun turrets positioned forward of the superstructure.
During World War II, Rodney participated in several major Royal Navy operations. In 1940, she was deployed during the Norwegian campaign. Her most famous engagement took place on 27 May 1941, when she joined other British warships in the final battle against the German battleship Bismarck. During this action, Rodney fired hundreds of rounds from her powerful 16-inch main guns.
Later in the war, Rodney escorted convoys in the Mediterranean and supported Allied landings in North Africa, Sicily and Italy. In June 1944, she also participated in the Normandy landings, using her heavy guns to bombard German defensive positions. Following the war, Rodney was withdrawn from service and eventually scrapped in 1948.
